Upload an audio file to estimate its musical key, major or minor scale, and tempo. This key and BPM finder analyzes the song directly in your browser and shows confidence information alongside the result.

FROM AUDIO TO MUSICAL INFORMATION
A finished song does not contain a text label saying “this is 124 BPM in F-sharp minor.” A BPM detector has to infer repeating timing patterns, while a key detector examines how spectral energy is distributed among musical pitch classes.

Tempo analysis searches for recurring attacks and rhythmic pulse patterns, while tonal analysis builds a chroma profile showing the relative strength of the twelve pitch classes.
The strongest tempo and tonal candidates become the primary result. Confidence indicators and alternative interpretations provide context when the recording is musically ambiguous.
TEMPO ANALYSIS
BPM — beats per minute — describes the rate of a musical pulse. A tempo finder can estimate that pulse by examining attacks in the recording and searching for repeating rhythmic intervals.
This is useful when you have an existing recording but do not know its tempo. Upload the song, run the analysis, and the BPM finder will display the strongest estimated tempo.

UNDERSTANDING THE RESULT
Automatic music analysis is not the same as reading tempo and key from a score. The algorithm has to infer musical structure from a mixed audio signal.
A recording with a stable pulse and clear harmonic center usually provides stronger evidence than highly free timing, changing tempo, sparse percussion, key changes or harmonically ambiguous material.
The confidence indicators describe how clearly the leading candidate stands out inside this analyzer's measurements. They should not be interpreted as a mathematical guarantee that a musical label is correct.
PRACTICAL USES
Knowing the likely key and tempo can provide a useful starting point when you are preparing a session, studying a reference track, practicing with a song, organizing music or exploring an unfamiliar recording.
Use the detected BPM as a starting reference when setting a project tempo or comparing the rhythmic pace of different recordings.
The estimated key and scale can help you begin investigating chords, melodies and compatible musical material.
Analyze a reference track when you want quick musical context before examining its arrangement, harmony or production in more detail.

FAQ
Upload the audio file to the Key & BPM Finder and run the analysis. The tool examines rhythmic information to estimate BPM and pitch-class information to estimate the most likely musical key and major or minor scale.
Yes. This song key finder decodes the selected audio in your browser, builds a tonal profile and compares it with major and minor key profiles. The strongest candidate is displayed together with alternative candidates.
If your browser can decode the selected audio format, the BPM detector can analyze it. MP3 and WAV are commonly supported by modern browsers; support for other formats can vary by browser and operating system.
Rhythmic patterns can support multiple pulse interpretations. A beat at one level of the rhythm may correspond to approximately half or twice another plausible tempo. This analyzer compares related pulse levels and also displays half-time and double-time values for context.
Key detection is an estimate from audio rather than a reading of written music. Modulation, ambiguous harmony, unusual tuning, sparse tonal content, strong non-harmonic material or a short excerpt can make one tonal center harder to identify.
It describes how clearly the leading tonal candidate stands out from other candidates in this analyzer. It is useful for comparing the result with alternatives, but it is not a guarantee of musical correctness.
No. This page analyzes an existing audio file automatically. The Tap BPM & Rhythm Test is intended for manually tapping a pulse and evaluating rhythm-related input.
The analyzer implemented on this page processes the selected audio locally with browser-side JavaScript and the Web Audio API. Its analysis code does not upload the song to Ronter Sound in order to calculate key or BPM.
